FetchSandbox as a Hoverfly Alternative
Hoverfly is excellent at recording and replaying real traffic. FetchSandbox is for teams that would rather generate the sandbox from an OpenAPI spec than hand-maintain a simulation file.
Where Hoverfly is strong
Hoverfly is a service virtualization tool with a record-and-replay model. You proxy real API traffic through it, capture the responses, and replay them later. This is great for legacy systems where you do not have an OpenAPI spec, or when you specifically need to simulate exact production responses you observed.
Where FetchSandbox is different
FetchSandbox starts from the spec, not from recorded traffic. Upload an OpenAPI 3.x spec and a stateful sandbox is provisioned in 2 seconds — endpoints, schemas, auth, lifecycle state machines, all derived. No simulation files to maintain. When the spec updates, the sandbox updates with it.
The other key difference is that FetchSandbox is stateful by design. Hoverfly simulations are stateless replays unless you explicitly model state with their middleware system. FetchSandbox does state machines and webhook events out of the box.
When to pick which
Use Hoverfly for
- Capturing and replaying real production traffic
- APIs without an OpenAPI spec
- Service virtualization at the proxy layer
- Tests that need to match exact recorded responses
Use FetchSandbox for
- APIs that have an OpenAPI spec (most modern ones)
- Stateful integration tests across multi-step flows
- Webhook handler tests with real events
- CI runs without manual stub maintenance
